Making up for missed fasts this Ramadan 2024

Assalamu Alaikum,

It is a kind reminder:

  • The rate of Sadqa Fitr is $8 per person (even for a new born baby).
  • The Fidya rate is also $8 per day. Fidya is paid in circumstances when it is difficult or nearly impossible for an individual to fast. These circumstances may include any of the following:
    1. The person is very old.
    2.  The person is reliant on medicine.
    3. The person is permanently ill (physically or mentally).
In these cases, the individual is liable to feed one poor person for each missed fast, or donate the price of one meal for each missed fast, i.e., $8 ($240 for missing all the 30 fasts of Ramadan). Allah says in Surah Baqarah:
وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ
( سورة البقرة:١٨٤)
Translation: As for those who cannot fast, there is a Fidya: The feeding of one poor person for each missed day.
  • You can also pay Fidya on behalf of your dead loved ones if they had missed any fasts and did not observe fasts against the ones they had missed or did not pay the Fidya themselves when they were alive.
